Information Systems & Supply Chains

Digital transformation is one of the major new topics of recent years. In contrast to many previous digitalization projects, which focused on the use of information and communication technologies in the economy, the digital transformation looks at the economy, society and politics in equal measure and thus also includes people in their private and professional environment.

The Information Systems & Supply Chains profile area focuses on fields of application in the economy and examines and shapes the digital transformation based on the provision of services by companies (trade, production) and the supply chains between companies. In order to successfully shape the digital transformation, sound knowledge of the associated business management topics is just as essential as knowledge of information and communication technologies.

Business success through IT-supported supply chains

What is it about? As a student in the "Information Systems & Supply Chains" profile area, you will deal with digital transformation and focus on the interaction of IT and organization using the example of internal and inter-company communication processes. You will learn how internal and inter-company information management interacts with supply chain planning (procurement, production and logistics planning) and supply chain management. Finally, you will learn how to independently conceptualize, design and implement digital transformation through IT and SCM projects.

What is being researched? The participating departments are conducting research in the broad field of digital transformation, including intelligent information and planning systems, artificial intelligence topics such as machine learning and predictive analytics, as well as problem-specific optimization models and methods. The use of other information and communication technologies such as blockchain technology, large language models and chatbots will be investigated in order to optimize the planning and management of supply chains, integrate information systems and make access to information systems efficient for users. Data management and modeling techniques play a fundamental role in this context. Due to the extensive exchange with companies, negotiation management and communication theories are also applied and further developed. The implementation of these research topics in the field of application-oriented project management is also investigated.

Why should you choose this profile area? The digital transformation is in full swing, but has by no means reached all areas of the economy and society. As such, this topic is one of the major issues of the future. The importance of stable, functioning supply chains became particularly clear during the pandemic. Both business and politics have reacted to this, changing framework conditions, redesigning existing implementations or establishing new ones.

This has led to an even greater demand for appropriately trained employees. Not only is IT knowledge expected, but the combination of IT- and specialist departments is in high demand. As a graduate of the Information Systems & Supply Chains profile area, this is precisely what sets you apart. In order to optimally prepare you for this, seminars with a project character are regularly organized in which current issues are examined with real customers from industry using scientific methods and possible solutions are developed for the customers in the form of concepts and functional prototypes.
