Doctoral Program in Economics

The Doctoral Program in Economics at the University of Hohenheim meets the high international standards of a qualified and structured doctoral programme. The expertise of eleven economics chairs opens up the perspective of diverse and interdisciplinary research and enables a variety of joint offers such as research seminars. The extensive range of courses for doctoral students forms the professional basis for high-quality training in quantitative and analytical methods.

The diverse and progressive faculty of professors is characterised by its openness to unusual research questions and support for new research approaches in supervising doctoral students. An important component of the doctoral college is the promotion of networking among the doctoral students through continuous professional exchange, e.g. with guest lecturers in personal office hours or reading groups, as well as the organisation of special PhD events that promote informal exchange in addition to the professional content, e.g. work workshops, excursions, PhD breakfasts.

Transdisciplinary research

To strengthen transdisciplinary research and cross-faculty networking, the Institute of Economics also cooperates with the Computational Science Hub (CSH). The CSH offers researchers from all three faculties at the University of Hohenheim who are involved in the analysis and processing of large data sets as well as the development of mathematical and statistical methods for data analysis a platform for close exchange in research and teaching.

Structure of the Doctoral Program in Economics

The Doctoral Program in Economics is divided into a Basics and a Specialization area. In the Basics area, the focus is particularly on teaching research strategies and methods. The basic training is supplemented by courses in the area of soft skills and university didactics as well as by active participation in workshops, research seminars and scientific conferences.

In the Specialization area, students can choose between the Research Track and the Teaching Track. In the Research Track, students can choose courses with a focus on specialization content in addition to the methodological specialisation. In the Teaching Track, doctoral candidates complete the Baden-Württemberg Certificate for Higher Education Didactics in addition to the methodological specialisation.

The graphical depiction (on the right) shows a simplified overview of the structure. The complete information on ECTS and alternative options can be found in the Further detailing of the Doctoral Study Program in Business, Economics and Social Sciences, Doctoral Program in Economics.
