Assurance of Learning

Assurance of Learning (AoL) is a core component of AACSB accreditation and complements the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences (BESS)´s already well-established quality management system in studies and teaching. AoL is a systematic and continuous process that ensures students achieve the learning expectations for the degree program in which they are enrolled. Through this process, competency goals are established, a measurement system for our student success in meeting those goals is implemented, and an action plan for improving student learning outcomes is developed. The process is managed by BESS' AoL Committee, which consists of the Dean of Studies, the Head of the Studies and Teaching in the Faculty Management, the AoL Coordinator, and the Academic Program Directors.

Relevance of the AoL process for students

  • Students´ feedback via the graduate survey and anonymous random samples of students’ work are used to check the progress in meeting the competency goals.
  • Students are involved in improving the curriculum through their performance and feedback.

Relevance of the AoL process for the faculty

  • We are able to receive current, significant, and detailed insights into the learning performance and development of students.
  • Results are an important contribution to the continuously improvement process of the curriculum.

AoL-Process

As shown below the AoL process can be seen to have six stages.

Assurance of Learning - Competency Goals

Competency goals define skills, abilities, and knowledge that students are expected to acquire upon completion of their degree program. On the one hand, competency goals communicate to students the goals they are working towards, and on the other hand, the competency goals support potential students to select programs that match their career goals. The goals are clearly defined and presented at the program level.
