Specialization Area Business Administration and Economics

Starting in the 4th semester, you can tailor your degree program to your individual needs: After completing the foundational courses, you’ll choose from specializations in Finance, Management, HR or International Business and earn 24 credits based on your interests. Dual and triple bachelor’s degree programs begin as early as the first semester.

Your Profile, Your Degree Program

By choosing your area of specialization, you can tailor your degree program to your individual needs and deepen your knowledge in your field of interest. On the pages for each specialization, you’ll find all the important information about course content, possible module combinations, and elective options in the free elective area, as well as an overview of career prospects. This allows you to tailor your degree program perfectly to your personal interests and professional goals and lay the foundation for your future career.

Note

Starting in the 2025 summer semester, the “Finance” specialization was revised. Starting in the 2025–2026 winter semester, you can also choose the new “Accounting, Controlling & Taxation” (ACT) specialization. The previous specializations, “Internal Management” and “Accounting and Taxation,” are being phased out but can still be completed.

If you wish to switch to the new ACT specialization, you must submit a request to the Examinations Office. Modules you have already completed may - depending on their content - be credited toward your degree, transferred to the free elective area, or recorded on your supplementary account.

You can find all current changes on the following pages, as well as in the module catalog and the course catalog on HohCampus.

Specialization Area Selection

Choose one of the specialization areas. Within the specialization you’ve chosen, you can specialize even further. At the end of your studies, your chosen specialization area will be listed on your transcript.
You make your specialization area selection official by registering for your first module exam in the corresponding specialization area folder in HohCampus.

A specialization area consists of:

  • Start of studies before the Winter Semester 2021/2022: 5 modules, each worth 6 credits (total of 30 credits)
  • Start of studies in or after the Winter Semester 2021/2022: 6 modules, each worth 6 credits (total of 36 credits)

At least one of these must be a seminar module (profile or project seminar). When selecting modules, note whether they are compulsory (P), semi-elective (WP), or elective (W) modules. You must take the required modules in your specialization area. For the semi-elective modules, you must observe the restrictions listed there, and you can fill the remainder of your specialization area with elective modules.

Humboldt Reloaded Project Seminar

Depending on the offerings, a Humboldt Reloaded project may also be counted as a specialization seminar toward your specialization area (module code: 5000-340). You may participate in multiple projects. Each project can only be credited once. You may also have Humboldt Reloaded projects credited toward your free elective area.

How do I plan my profile?

You have the option to customize your course of study. The curriculum outlines the ideal course of study. However, you can also distribute your desired modules across the semesters as you wish. This is particularly useful if you plan to spend a semester abroad. The best time for this is the 5th semester (the so-called “mobility window”), with 24 credits from your studies abroad counting toward the free elective area.

Counselling Session

At the counselling session on the specialization areas, you’ll get all the important information and answers to your questions. Before you choose your specialization in the 4th semester, we’ll briefly introduce the specialization areas to you once again. This will allow you to clarify your specific questions based on the information available on the website.

Professors, research assistants, academic advisors, and students—as well as representatives from the Language Center, the student council, and the faculty—will be on hand to offer guidance during this event.

The counselling  session on the specialization areas will take place on December 1, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. sharp in the Audimax, followed by a get-together in the foyer of the Biology Building.

Up-to-date information on the specialization areas is expected to be available on the website starting in mid-November.
