Important Basics for your Studies

Academic Documents

Which modules do I need to take during my studies? Which modules are required electives? Are there deadlines during my studies?

You’ll find the answers to these questions in the examination regulations and the course catalog - two important documents that will help you stay on top of your studies.

The examination regulations contain all legal provisions regarding exams. In the module catalog, you’ll find all the modules you must or may take during your studies. Be sure to read through everything at the start of your studies so you’re fully informed about your options. This is your tool for planning your studies from the very beginning.

Organisation of Studies

When are my classes? When are the exams?

Here are your guides:

  • Create your own personal class schedule.
  • In the course catalog, you’ll find all the courses for the current semester.
  • In HohCampus, you can manage your studies, such as re-registering for your study program and signing up for exams.
  • In ILIAS, you can access course content and materials.

Orientation and Midterm Exam

What is the orientation and midterm exam?

Throughout your studies, you will take the orientation exam and the midterm exam as part of your coursework.

By the end of the third semester, you must earn 42 ECTS credits from the first three semesters of the required curriculum to pass the orientation exam. To do so, you must complete at least seven modules (42 ECTS) from the following areas:

  • Basics of Digital Business Management
  • Basics of Business Informatics
  • Basics of Mathematics and Data Analytics
  • Basics of Economics
  • Basics of the Social Sciences

You have passed the intermediate exam if you have earned 90 ECTS credits from the required courses by the end of the fifth semester.

Specialisation Area

Starting in the 3rd semester, you can specialize and develop your own unique academic profile. There are many modules available, from which you can choose nine.

Internship

In the free elective area, you have two different options for completing an ungraded internship: an internship lasting at least five weeks (6 ECTS) or one lasting at least 12 weeks (18 ECTS). The internship must be completed as a single, uninterrupted period on a full-time basis. However, there is one exception: 4 weeks of the internship can be credited toward a part-time student job. The Internship Office is your point of contact for handling the internship. There, you’ll also find helpful tips for finding an internship position.

Semester Abroad and Credit Recognition

As part of your degree program, you can spend time studying abroad. The University of Hohenheim maintains partnerships with other universities both within Europe - through the ERASMUS program - and overseas. You have the opportunity to have coursework you complete abroad recognized toward the modules in your degree program.

Here, you are free to take modules from any of the faculty’s WiSo bachelor’s programs, as well as modules from your specialization area. Alternatively, you can fulfill the 18 credits with an internship, language courses, or coursework completed abroad.

Theses

There is an assignment process to help you find an advisor for your thesis. Two assignment procedures are offered each year: The first takes place in February for students registering for their thesis in the summer semester, and the second takes place in July for students registering for their thesis in the winter semester. The assignment procedure is conducted via ILIAS.
