Centralized Assignment Process

In the bachelor’s programs and in the KMA master’s program, thesis topics are assigned through a centralized assignment process. This process takes place once per semester. As part of the process, you indicate your preferences regarding who you would like to write your thesis with. The assignment process takes place via a preference survey in ILIAS. The start of the preference survey is announced via the degree programs’ mailing list and published in “Kurz gemeldet.”

Deadlines for the Assignment Process
  • February 1–February 15: Register during this period if you want to write your thesis during the summer semester.
  • July 1–July 15: Register during this period if you would like to write your thesis during the winter semester.

What happens next?

You will usually receive notification of your assignment 1–2 weeks after the deadline. This will be followed by a meeting with your supervisor. After that, you will register your thesis with the Examinations Office.

Important Information on the Assignment Process for Bachelor's Theses | DBM, S&C, Wiwi, Wipäd, WI

Please read the following information carefully before indicating your preferences.

Submitting Preferences

To participate in the assignment process, you must select exactly five departments and rank them in order of preference. The following rules apply:

  • Each department may be selected only once. Therefore, you must specify five different departments.
  • The departments at Institute 570 led by Prof. Kuckertz, Prof. Büttgen, Prof. Voeth, Prof. Hadwich, Prof. Ebersberger, Prof. Gimpel, and Prof. Hüttl-Maack are among the most highly sought-after departments. You may include a maximum of three of these departments on your preference list.

Please note that failure to comply with these rules will affect your participation in the regular assignment process.

Procedure of the Assignment Process

After the application period ends, the first preferences of all students are first forwarded to the respective departments. The departments are then given the opportunity to select a certain number of students from among the applicants who listed them as their first preference, within the limits of their available capacity.

The remaining spots are then allocated through a centralized placement process, taking into account the stated preferences and available capacity.

Consequences of Violating the Rules

Students whose preference selections violate the guidelines mentioned above will be asked via email after the registration period ends to correct their information.

Please note, however, that these students will not be able to participate in the first-choice selection round, as it takes place at the same time. This can significantly reduce the likelihood of being assigned to your preferred department.

Depending on your preferences, it is possible that you cannot be directly assigned to any of the selected departments because their capacities are full. In this case, you will be contacted and provided with a list of the departments that still have available supervision capacity.

Assignment by Departmens

In the following master’s programs, thesis assignments are handled directly by the respective departments: Economics with Data Science, IBE, Management, WI, and Wipäd. Contact the department where you would like to write your thesis well in advance.

Please note the following:

  • The Institute for Marketing & Management centrally assigns master’s theses for its affiliated departments. You can find further information here.
  • If you wish to write your thesis at the Chair of Innovation Management (570F), please follow this procedure.
  • If you would like to write your thesis at the Chair of Innovation Economics (520I), please follow this procedure.
  • If you would like to write your thesis at one of the two Wipäd professorships, you can find all information regarding the application process here.
