Communication Studies

Specialization Area

Starting in the 4th semester, you can specialize and develop your academic profile. Once you’ve learned the fundamentals of communication studies, you’ll have the opportunity to tailor your studies to your own interests and career goals.

Specialization Area

During your studies, you’ll take courses in two specialization areas, allowing you to set your own academic focus. You can choose from six areas:
Social Discourses, Media Research, Political Communication, Media Psychology, Organizational Communication, and Online Communication.

This allows you to tailor your degree program to your interests and career goals. Each specialization area is worth a total of 24 credits.

Each specialization area consists of two modules, both of which you must take within that specialization area. Enrollment in the specialization areas is limited. There is an annual admissions process during the summer semester. You can find more information below.

Procurement Process

Places in the specialization area are allocated through an admission process. During the summer semester, you will receive a preference survey in which you can indicate which specialization area you would prefer to choose.

Your preferences will be taken into account during the allocation process. The goal of the process is to distribute students as evenly as possible across the individual specialization area.

The preference survey is conducted via ILIAS. You will receive information about the process and how to participate in a timely manner via the KoWi mailing list.

Counselling Session

At the counselling session on the specialization areas, you’ll get all the important information and answers to your questions. Before you choose your specialization in the 4th semester, we’ll briefly introduce the specialization areas to you once again. This will allow you to clarify your specific questions based on the information available on the website.

Professors, research assistants, academic advisors, and students will be on hand to offer guidance during this session.

The exact date will be announced at the beginning of the winter semester.
